youth with a mission

Youth With A Mission is a global movement of Christians from many cultures, age groups, and Christian traditions, dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Also known as YWAM (pronounced “WHY-wham”), we unite in a common purpose to know God and to make Him known.

Back when we began in 1960, our main focus was to get youth involved in missions. Today, we still focus on youth, and we also involve people aged 9 to 90. We currently have tens of thousands of staff (called “YWAMers”) and we work in thousands of teams and locations.

YWAM is located in almost every country around the world and YWAM Tasmania is one of them. The joy of being part of YWAM is seeing so many different denominations and nationalities come together, celebrate each others’ differences, and show the world that there is unity in diversity.

Our History

Ywam tasmania

We are a ministry and missions training centre located on the beautiful countryside of Tasmania. Our property sits on a beautiful 200 acre sheep farm on top of a hill, which overlooks the town of Sorell and the sea. Our natural surroundings make for a peaceful and quiet location – perfect for spending time in prayer and worship. There is always plenty of wildlife around and it’s not uncommon to see wallabies roaming around in the fields.

We are currently building a self-sustaining, environmentally friendly centre where our staff, students and visitors can spend time getting to know God. This means we are developing more community buildings, more housing, and increasing our sustainable community projects.

The legacy of our property has been in caring for and equipping people to carry God’s love to the nations. This is why our emphases here is on intimacy with God and building community. These objectives are the basis of our vision and are carried out through all of our ministries and relational endeavours.

The Coates Family

YWAM Tasmania was originally pioneered by the Lucerne family on the first of February 1985.

Tim and Tracey Coates are originally from Victoria, Australia, and have served in Tasmania for the last seven years. At the beginning of 2022, they stepped into the role as our Campus Directors.

In the previous seven years, together with their youngest son Josh, they have been leading training schools and outreaches to Papua New Guinea, Bougainville, Indonesia, The Philippines, Thailand, and Mongolia. In Tasmania, they pioneered a Bible distribution program that began in 2021 with the dream of getting a Gospel into every home. So far, over 7,500 bibles have been given out. They have a huge heart for God and His people. What a fantastic couple!

Fun Fact: Tim has been to 70 countries and Tracey has been to 53 countries.

Meet our leaders

YWAM Tasmania was originally pioneered by the Lucerne family on the first of February 1985.

Ray and Shiree, originally from Sydney, Australia; completed their DTS in Adelaide in 1990. After their DTS they continued to serve the centre in Adelaide with a few breaks here and there. Years later, they sensed the Lord was rearranging where they were (in Adelaide), and was sending them to Tasmania to re-pioneer the work of YWAM there. Ephesians three was on their hearts and Love Tasmania is their catch cry. They have a real desire to see the people of Tasmania come into their full destiny through prayer, healing, and worship. The journey officially began in Tasmania February of 2012.

Since the re-pioneering of YWAM Tasmania; Ray and Shiree have visited every town within Tasmania as part of their ministry “Love Tasmania, they’ve seen God do tremendous things here in  the centre and through the people God has sent here over the years. They are currently the regional leaders of Kings Kids for the south pacific. They have a big heart for discipleship and seeing nations transformed through prayer and worship. Their heart for missions is that all people would know and encounter the love of God and for everyone to continually have opportunities to grow and develop in their relationship with God and know that they can make a difference in the world.
